Doncaster Loses Old Resident
Early this month Mr George Thompson Petty, of Main road Doncaster passed away at the age of 75 years. The late Mr Petty was born in Yorkshire, England but came to Australia with his parents when he was very young. He learned the saddlery trade, and after was employed in the sawmills of John Sharpe and Son, where he became an expert in dealing with circular and band saws. While living in the city he was a prominent athlete, and was very successful at fast racing. On one occasion he was the winner of the Eight hours’ Champion Cup. About the year 1880 he came to Doncaster, and went in for fruit growing and proved successful. His four sons are all engaged in fruit growing in the Doncaster district. Mr Petty took a deep interest in all public matters, and never failed to exercise his vote, both at Parliamentary as well as local elections. He was a prominent member of the Church of Christ and was church secretary for over 30 years. He was an enthusiast at music, and as choir leaser in the church did much to improve the singing. He was a staunch teatotaller, and took a great interest in all efforts made to train the young in the paths of sobriety. Deceased was also of a very benevolent nature, and was ever ready to assist in all efforts to help the needy. Many a house has been brightened by his practical sympathy. At the funeral a great crowd assembled round his grave, where Mr CC Lang of the Doncaster Church of Christ conducted the service. Mr John Tully read the Rechabite service, the late Mr Petty being a very old member of that order. |
